25 Years of Hard Work and Humility: The Truth About The Backstreet Boys

When the Backstreet Boys formed in 1993, with their ages ranging from 13 to 22, they were only hoping to become a success and maybe, by some miracle, keep that success for more than a few years.

Fast Forward to 2018, Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ, and Nick are celebrating 25 years together and their first single, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, in the top 10 on the American Top 40 Hot AC Chart. Media outlets who had counted the Boys out just a few years ago are now aware of their ongoing success and reporting on it as such. Their Vegas residency, announced in 2016 and running since March 2017, is still one of the best selling shows on the Strip, not only garnering the attention of fans across the world, but quite a few celebrities as well (including Niall Horan, Snooki, Gwen Stefani and more).

The Boys will be ending their residency next year only to start another world tour, their first since a successful tour hitting multiple countries worldwide from 2013-2015. Before heading out on tour, they will be releasing their highly anticipated new album in coming months, a follow up to 2013’s In A World Like This. Always ones to put fans first, the Boys previewed tracks that they had recorded already (that may or may not be on the album) earlier this year during an event on their sold out cruise.

How did they achieve such massive successes and what keeps them together? The question has been asked in many interviews and it all boils down to one thing — the Backstreet Boys are family.

“Nobody tells you what to do when you get to the top.” – Brian Littrell, Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of: The Backstreet Boys Movie

Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick have literally grown up in front of everyone’s eyes.

They’ve walked hundreds of red carpets.

They’ve received numerous awards.

They’ve released nine studio albums (even more songs).

They’ve filmed a documentary that revealed a lot of truth behind the biggest selling boyband of all time.

And they’ve always been honest about who they are as people and who they are as performers. Perhaps that is the best part of the Backstreet Boys – their authenticity.

Amidst their clean cut facade in 2001, 4/5 of the Boys appeared on TRL unexpectedly to announce that they would be putting the Black and Blue tour on hiatus to allow AJ McLean the time he needed to enter rehab and seek treatment for his alcoholism and depression.

“We didn’t want to sweep it under the rug,” Kevin Richardson had told fans at the time.

And that was the moment, for a lot of fans, that sparked a new sense of loyalty to the band they had screamed senselessly over as preteens. Things were changing. We were all growing up and dealing with things and so were they. Suddenly, there seemed like a new relationship had formed. This wasn’t a completely innocent band who had a dark past they weren’t telling us about. These were five talented human beings who were not only wildly successful at this point, but cared enough about their fans to be honest and cared enough about humankind in general to use their platform to bring awareness to the fact that addiction can affect anyone.

Really though, can a band really have a “dark past” when they’ve been open about everything that they’ve dealt with?

There’s been battles with addictions.

There’s been bad relationships that played out in the tabloids.

There’s been public family discord.

There’s been court battles with Lou Pearlman.

There’s been battles with each other.

There’s been vocal issues and illnesses.

The Backstreet Boys have been human. And they’ve done it in front of the entire world. They’ve addressed it. They’ve stayed classy about situations as they have gotten older and they’ve known that in order to be where they are now and who they are now, some things had to happen.

They know that even the ugliest battles have had silver linings and have turned those experiences into some of the best songs on their albums.

Most importantly, the Backstreet Boys have never let themselves be defined by the negative experiences they’ve had but rather, grew from them.

How Did The Backstreet Boys Become The Biggest Boyband In The World?

Simply put, hard work and remembering where they came from.

The Boys’ success did not come easy. They spent most of their early years playing in high school gyms to students who didn’t exactly love them before heading overseas to gain massive success. It wasn’t until 1997 that they found any fame in the U.S.

Any of them will tell you on any given day how grateful they are still for their continued success and that they never take it for granted. They also don’t take anyone else for granted who has helped them along their way. That has most recently included the team they worked with to produce “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”.

“The one thing that really made me impressed with them is that boys are so verbally appreciative of us,” Stuart Crichton says, who helped produce the Boys’ latest single. “They’ve had a lot of success, which more often than not makes artists aloof with you; the ego takes over. But in any interview, we all get mentioned. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve told us how grateful they are. Even the last time I saw Kevin (Richardson), he turned to me and was like, ‘I can’t tell you enough, but thanks so much for ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. It’s just so great for us.’ It makes me want to work ten times harder for them.”

Throughout the Boys’ history, there aren’t many interviews where they HAVEN’T been extremely vocal about their appreciation for anyone has helped shaped their career, from musical inspirations, other artists, former managers, and, of course, fans.

That deep-rooted appreciation even extends to Backstreet Boys-creator Lou Pearlman, who ultimately scammed the group out of millions of dollars they were owed. Are they still bitter? No. In fact, they are sad for him and sad that things ended the way they did. When asked by Entertainment Tonight how they felt about his death in 2017, Kevin, Howie, AJ, Nick and Brian expressed that it was ‘bittersweet’ and recognized that the highs and lows that they have faced as a group, like the ones they did with Pearlman, made them the group that they are today.

As for their fans…

Not only do the Backstreet Boys tour worldwide to try to reach as many fans as possible, set sail on cruises with daily events and nightly parties with fans, continue to create music, and try to connect in their downtime, but they have gone above and beyond in some instances that you can read about here.

Did we also mention that the Boys are constantly giving back? From having their own charities to performing charity shows, the BSB are always giving back in any area that they can.

Earlier this Summer, you could find Nick (along with his family) raising money to fund classroom supplies for teachers and children at a local elementary school in Las Vegas as well as helping raise awareness for the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation. Howie Dorough consistently makes appearances at charity events in his local Florida community as well and AJ McLean raised funds for a local school in California to be able to replace instruments that were stolen as well as a complete music room makeover.

Kentucky cousins Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell have also been notably philanthropic and very big advocates for different causes, especially those they have been especially touched by. Kevin, who lost his father to colon cancer at a young age, has been vocal about the importance of early screenings. He’s also involved environmental conservation (and has sent several kids to college on environmental scholarships) as well as opening up about he and his wife’s fertility struggle in an effort to help other families who might be going through the same journey. Brian Littrell, while quieter about his charitable giving in his local area of Georgia, has perhaps been the most active Backstreet Boy with his own charity, Healthy Heart Club for Kids. While the charity has dissolved and evolved into a larger reaching “Just Ask”, Brian has never shied away from spreading awareness about living a heart-healthy life, having been affected by his own heart disease since he was an infant.

As a group, the Backstreet Boys donated $1 of every Vegas residency ticket sale to the Animal Foundation in Las Vegas during their first run and to the Boys and Girls Club during their second run. They also visited the Club to speak with the kids about pursuing their dreams and the importance of hard work before spending time shooting hoops and showing them a few dance moves.

“Not only are we group members and business partners, but we’re family.” – Kevin Richardson

“Those guys can go a cappella at the drop of a hat and deliver an amazing performance — and they actually dance, and are committed and disciplined,” Joseph Kahn, now famed director who got his start with the “Everybody” music video, told Billboard. “Sometimes when you’re a solo act, you have no one to say ‘no’… The great thing about boy bands, and why Justin Timberlake comes out fine, is that you have people around you to say ‘No.’ You have to learn how to share, it’s like growing up in a family. That’s the Backstreet Boys. They’re brothers. They’re truly a band.”

While there’s a lot to be said for the Backstreet Boys working hard and cultivating an atmosphere of humanity and gratitude throughout their 25 year career, none of it would have been possible without each individual member of the talented quintet.

These five are brothers. They are admittedly family, with high highs and low lows like everyone else. They’ve very literally grown up together. Like family, they stick together and stand by one another. They take the hits, they roll with the punches, and together, they get rise to the occasion everytime.

So, it’s no surprise to anyone that has followed the Boys for any amount of time that they would take up for one another and hear each other out when a less than ideal situation arises. It’s this united front that has kept them together and it’s a genuine love and deep-rooted care for each other that has given them a bright future. While they have been honest about their arguments and kept it real about how they’ve had fall outs here and there, there has always been an underlying respect for each other in their words.

Clearly, the Backstreet Boys are not going anyway. For better or for worse.

And it’s not just being family with each other. With Brian, Kevin, Howie, AJ and Nick all married with children, the family has expanded to include Leighanne, Kristin, Leigh, Rochelle, Lauren, Baylee, Mason, Maxwell, Holden, James, Ava, Lyric and Odin.

It goes without saying that the Backstreet Boys are in a good place, personally and publicly. There’s a whole lot of love to go around.

Taking The High Road

“Things are really good in our lives right now. We’re really fortunate and we know that is a blessing.” – Nick Carter, Paper Magazine, 2017

Lastly, and perhaps the most refreshing in times of social media where it is so easy to react quickly, is the fact that Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick have never been, for lack of a better term, petty. Not since they’ve grown up anyway.

Since the beginning, they’ve taken whatever the public and the media has thrown at them in stride and have taken it as fuel to work harder, only addressing what needed to be addressed. Their music has, and will continue to, speak for them.

Because they have been open (as much as they need to be) about their highs and lows, they have opened themselves up for criticism that they have handled pretty well…but they’ve also been able to form a deeper connection with folks around the world – from fans to celebrities to the general population.

They are the people’s musical group. They’ve made it abundantly clear that they’re just five regular guys that tour the world and share their talents in front of millions but also take out the trash when they’re home and put on their pants the same way we all do.

Always classy, always appreciative, and always looking to be better, do more, and work harder, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, and Nick Carter continue to inspire new musical acts (including Florida Georgia Line, who they recently collaborated with and country artist Lauren Alaina, who met the Boys at the CMT Awards), get name dropped by other celebrities who have nothing but love and respect for them and continue to inspire legions of fans, some who have followed them for years and some who are just jumping on the bandwagon. Some even credit the Backstreet Boys with making music that saved their lives.

“It’s the music, it’s the love, truthfully. We love this. It might sound cliche, but we love being The Backstreet Boys. We love what it represents. We enjoy what we do. We take pride in what we do, we have a common goal that unites us, and we do genuinely care about each other. We do genuinely want the other to be happy and fulfilled and allowing each other to do individual stuff,” the Boys told Robin Leach in an interview last year.

In an interview with People this year, Brian stated, “We’re blessed to still be doing this for so long and be so prosperous for so many years. The fans have really done it for us.”

The Backstreet Boys are entering a new era and there is no doubt that it is going to be a successful one.

We’re here for it. Are you?

5 Kind Things We Have To Say About Nick Carter

Every now and then, we like to put a series of posts together that highlight different things about each of the Backstreet Boys. There can never be too much love, right?

This time, we wanted to share posts with kind words for each Boy because sometimes we all need a reminder about how good these five are, not only together, but individually. Not everything that lives on the internet is positive, but it’s always been our aim to add a little to the “good side” and we encourage you to share your own kind words in the comments!

A few weeks ago, we started with Brian and we LOVED all the comments and stories that you guys had to share after we posted. Now, let’s move on to the one and only — Nick Carter.

1. He’s an INCREDIBLY hard worker.

giphy10

You can’t talk about Nick without talking about how INSANELY hard he works. From 2014 to 2017 alone, he was touring with BSB, touring with Jordan Knight, working on, releasing and touring for a solo album, writing, producing and acting in his own movie (and skyping with fans who donated to help fund it), competing on Dancing With The Stars, acting as architect on Boyband, promoting and kicking off the BSB Vegas run, working to record the Backstreet Boys upcoming album, and a WHOLE lot of little things in between.

Oh, and did we mention that in the middle of all of that, he became a husband and a father?

2. He listens to and cares about fans and their opinions.

giphy11

Nick Carter has always looked for ways to involve fans far before social media was prevalent. Once Twitter took off though, he has regularly checked in to ask for fan opinions on this or that, connected with people all over the world, and used anything he can to keep fans updated – from previews of what he’s working on on Instagram to blogs on his fanclub.

3. He’s become the family man we always knew he could be.

giphy12

For years, Nick insisted he wouldn’t settle down, but in 2014, he got married and in 2016, he became a dad. Let us tell you, there is NOTHING sweeter than the family man he has become. Sure, we love onstage Nick and VIP Nick and actor Nick, etc. but for the first time in forever, we love seeing him at home as well. Why? Because he’s so happy and healthy and being a husband and dad is something he genuinely enjoys.

And it’s made his work better. Nick commented in a recent Q&A on his website that “everything he does now, is for [Odin], including making music” because he wants to make things that he’s proud of. AW!

4. He’s passionate about everything he feels strongly about.

giphy13

One thing Nick doesn’t lack is passion. From the stage to everyday life, there is no question that he loves what he loves, will sing the hell out of any lyric, and will fight for what and who he believes in. I mean, have you seen him when the Bucs are playing? We love that zest!

It’s also worth mentioning that one of his big passions is promoting a healthy lifestyle and he has not been shy about sharing all of the changes he’s made personally for the betterment of himself for his family. Inspiring.

5. He makes everyone feel like family.

giphy14

Anyone that has been a Nick VIP event will tell you that he makes everyone feel appreciated. Anyone that has had a problem with a BSB situation knows that Nick is the Backstreet Boy to reach out to to have something handled. For so long, fans were his family and he is constantly giving back to us, reaching out, and doing what he can to make every experience a good one. There aren’t many people that have met Nick that would tell you differently. He’s basically like Olive Garden – never ending and you know, “when you’re here, you’re family”. We’re so lucky that he’s one of “ours”.

The Curious Case of Nick Carter and Melissa Schuman: All The Facts You Need To Know

In the past week, a lot of things have been posted and a lot of arguments have been thrown back and forth via social media in regards to Melissa Schuman’s allegations against Nick Carter in 2002. If you haven’t read about it, google it – we’re not going to link it in this post.

Numerous fans (and non-fans) have taken to Twitter, Facebook, etc. to post their opinions about the story and to be honest, none of us know exactly what transpired the night that Melissa has brought into question. That much is true. That is why we can only go off of what we know and that is where it gets confusing.

Before we lay out what we know and why we’re confused, let’s get one thing straight – we are not “victim shaming” and we know the whole “this is why victims don’t come forward” psychology. We get it. Just as Nick is innocent until proven guilty, we, personally, can not 100% refer to Melissa as a victim.

We’re not posting this to get into a he-said / she-said, but we’re posting it to give everyone a layout of WHY we’re all confused about these allegations (and to right a few things). If we’re going to talk about it, let’s talk about all of it. We are always welcoming of anyone who can dispute the items and clear things up for us as well.

Here we go:

  • Probably the most questionable fact regarding Melissa and Nick has been the fact that Melissa Schuman follows Nick Carter on Twitter. Even after many fans pointed this out, she has not unfollowed him. Melissa joined Twitter in April 2008 and Nick didn’t join until March 2009. This was 6 and 7 years after the alleged incident and it isn’t a case of “follow back” since Nick does not follow her.

We understand that it’s good to keep friendly relations in “the industry”, but if Melissa wanted nothing to do with Nick past the incident and the duet where he supposedly snubbed her for having a boyfriend, why is she following him on social media?

Capture

  • Melissa tweeted Nick her condolences after his sister Leslie passed away in 2012.

  • Melissa’s husband of 11 years (who she met in 2003), Brandon Henschel, is a dancer on Lip Sync Battle and danced on stage with Nick Carter, AJ McLean, and Gigi Hadid in 2016. Melissa liked this tweet about Nick and her husband being “DILFs”.

  • In 2012, Melissa retweeted a tweet about the song that she and Nick recorded together.

  • In a video on her YouTube page from September 2017, Melissa states that “music from BSB and NSYNC “gives her the “warm and fuzzies”.

  • This Summer, Melissa added a video of Nick in The Hollow to her YouTube playlist, posted by a Backstreet fan account.

  • Video
  •  It’s apparent across all social media channels that Melissa is trying to gain notoriety. She and her husband have applied to be on The Amazing Race and she has tweeted Celebrity Big Brother to be on as well. Her first YouTube video from 2014 is titled “I Need To Become Important On The Internet”, in which she talks about how much she wants to be back in the spotlight. See video here. This has been said to be an improv piece, but we have no proof. She has also tweeted multiple times over the years that she is looking to be on Dancing With The Stars. She was also active on social media (liking tweets / retweeting) about wanting to be a judge on Boy Band – which Nick Carter was already cast on.

  • Melissa name drops Nick in a 2015 interview about what she has been up to since Dream ended.

  • At 1:45 into this video, Melissa and Ashley (also from Dream) name NSYNC as their favorite boyband, but agree that they love the Backstreet Boys as well.

  • Perhaps the oddest is that Melissa did an Instagram Live with fans in May and at 2:30m, she states “that poor guy (Nick) has gone through so much. He’s been through it, I tell you. So sad” before going on to talk about how excited she is to watch Boy Band and mentioning that Aaron Carter is a “hoot”, signaling that her and Nick’s relationship went past one night. Watch here.

  • Speaking of Aaron, she also tweeted him (Nick’s brother) in 2013 in good spirits.dpvo6lfxuaix61h

  • We also find it odd that, before posting this piece on Harvey Weinstein and the #MeToo movement and how Maxim wanted her to show more skin against her wants, Melissa erased all traces of attending the Maxim Halloween party in 2015 from her Instagram….but not her Twitter (here, here, here, and here). There are multiple instagram posts that have been deleted actually, and upon posting her Nick Carter themed blog post, there were multiple fans that asked her where her Instagram post went that was praising him. Obviously, we can not retrieve deleted posts, but with so many alluding to them and a history of deleting things, we have reason to believe that they existed, just like people believe that these events actually happened.

  • Also…

I absolutely love this song by @nickcarter and @melissaaschuman. 💚💚💚

A post shared by 💟Brittany Nicole 💟 (@brittanynicole929) on

While Melissa changed her Instagram handle and deleted the above IG post, a fan shared the post before it was deleted. Melissa posted this photo of Nick with their song playing in December 2016 with words of praise for Nick — which has since been deleted.

CaptureMelissa also left the comment above in Summer 2017 on a Backstreet Boys fan’s video of the Boys from a Vegas show.

Melissa also claimed she didn’t tell anyone about it for a long time. However, in a story to Life & Style magazine in early 2018, where she changed the incident from 2002 to 2003 after it had been published, claimed that multiple people knew, including her fellow Dream members.

Capture

It is also confusing as to why Melissa said she avoided Nick after the alleged incident in her blog post detailing the night in question and that he was seemingly harassing her to talk to him, but then during her appearance on Dr. Oz, claimed that they continued to film scenes together for The Hollow.

“Shortly after he called me. He called me over and over and over again and I wouldn’t pick up. I didn’t want to hear his voice. He jammed my phone with calls for weeks, leaving me messages demanding I speak with him. Then he finally left me one last nasty, angry message and he never called me again. It was over, at least I thought it was. I thought I’d never have to see or hear from him ever again.” – Melissa’s Blog, November 2018

“We filmed scenes together and he acted like nothing even happened. I brought my friend to set. My dad came to set.” – Melissa during her appearance on Dr. Oz, November 2018

There is also a few more conflicting statements about the aftermath of the alleged events.

This was reported in Life and Style in February 2018:

This comment left on her own Instagram, which was deleted after the Life and Style article was published, suggests otherwise.

MS_IG_Post

Nick has always been very open and honest with fans and the general public, detailing events he isn’t proud of in hopes that someone else will learn from his mistakes. So, in addition to the above facts about why we find Melissa’s claims hard to believe, we can’t just take her word for it.

Again, we are not shaming Melissa Schuman, but the above pieces are what they are and we don’t have any reason to not believe Nick when he says that everything was consensual and that he’s shocked by these accusations… because we are too. If we had any reason to believe that Nick is guilty of sexual misconduct, we wouldn’t be writing this. We are reasonable human beings and we definitely don’t believe that Nick Carter can do no wrong… because he has….and he has taken complete ownership of it. He has given us EVERY reason to believe him, without having to convince us.

So, we leave you to draw your own conclusions, but get your facts straight and get all the pieces of the puzzle before you do. We owe it to everyone involved.

(For those finding this post since initial claims were made, this is Nick’s statement: “I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations. Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally. This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later. It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”)

[DISCLAIMER: Since this post was published, it has been assumed that I have some sort of paid association with Nick. That is a wrong assumption. I am a regular person with a job that has absolutely nothing to do with Nick Carter and this site has been my own with my own thoughts and opinions since 2014.]

12 Thoughts We Had During The ‘Boy Band’ Premiere

It finally happened.

The United States has gotten their head in the game to bring in heavy hitters and create a new boyband to take over the universe…at least for a little while. However, Nick Carter is not messing around – he stated in the premiere that he is looking for a successful “band of brothers” and what Nick wants, Nick gets. We can’t wait to see who the fab five turn out to be.

While you can read up-to-date recaps of interviews, episodes and more on nickcarter.net, we will be offering a lighter fan-side of things similar to our DWTS thoughts posts. As always, you can read our thoughts every Thursday LIVE via Twitter (@WHOTheBckstreet).

1. It Hit Us Hard That We Aren’t 16 Anymore.

Sure, we go to Vegas acting like we’re still teenagers, but when faced with boys that are ACTUALLY 14-19 years old, we realized how old we are, how illegal it is for us to have feels and why our moms were all about Kevin and Howie.

GIVE US SOME 24 YEAR OLDS STAT! Who is going to be the dad?! Who’s going to give “the look”? This is important.

2. We Wonder If These Contestants Would Pay Us To Read Nick’s Face For Them.

There wasn’t one Backstreet Boys fan watching who couldn’t tell exactly what Nick was thinking just by looking at his face, even if his mouth said something nicer than his expression.

3. These Boys Look A Lot Older At 14-15 Than Nick Did At 14-15.

What are these boys eating that their skin is so smooth, their hair is so great and their growth is so…grown-like? I mean, Nick was cute and all, but some of these boys are already hot. Please see #1.

4. How Long Until The Architects Collaborate?

We’re SUPER excited to see a new boyband come together, but any 90s girl is staring at Nick and Emma between performances, still wishing on every star for a BSB + Spice Girls tour. Then TIMBALAND?! The man behind a TON of recently popular songs on the radio? Excuse us while we mop up the drool at the thought of that collab.

5. Is Anyone Else Watching This Trying To Fit These Boys Into Backstreet Roles?

We pegged Sergio as a Nick/Howie mix and Cameron as a Kevin, banging his box and having a football background. How can we not try to find someone that fits OUR perfect boyband mold?

6. DANCINGGGGG…YESSSS!

One 1D fan tweeted on the night of the premiere asking why they would make these boys dance when boybands “don’t do that anymore”. PUH-LEASE. Give me a boyband that doesn’t dance that’s still together though? I’ll wait.

The boys that dance together, stay together.

Or something like that.

7. Don’t Care Who You Are, Where You’re From, What You Did…As Long As You Sing and Dance Together.

Whether we agreed with the top 18 or not, we have to admit that as soon as they hit the stage and worked the crowd, we were in our element. And so were they! We can’t wait to see more performances.

8. Nick’s Great At The Constructive Criticism!

….Even when it’s not the nicest. For example, “you have to have talent to be in a boyband”. ZING! But in the nicest way.

9. Those War Room Scenes Are INTENSE.

CONFLICT! CONFLICT! CONFLICT! Legit the scariest part of the show. We don’t like anyone to get their feelings hurt or not get their way.

10. The Nick + Sergio Bromance Is Real.

And when we tweeted about it, Nick liked it. Move over, Howie. Seriously though, we can’t blame him. Sergio Calderon is a huge stand out and we can only hope he makes it to the end.

Or that he ends up in Nick’s next movie.

11. We Did NOT Expect Timbaland To Have Moves.

That “Everybody” dance though… (Watch here)

12. We Can’t Wait To See Where This Goes!

Like we said, super excited to see a new boyband and the different opinions about different singers (we definitely had them). As the journey continues, our thoughts will get more in depth…and we’re going to have stronger opinions.

Miss the first episode? Watch it here.

4 Reasons We’re So Excited To Watch ‘Boy Band’

ABC announced Boy Band and we were ecstatic to watch a new reality based on one of our favorite subjects.

ABC announced that Nick Carter would be joining the show as an architect with Emma Bunton (aka Baby Spice) and we almost came unglued. Nick back on our TV every week for the Summer? Commercials that feature “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)”? You’re being so good to us, 2017!

Let’s go over a few other factors that play into our excitement.

1. Nick Carter As An Architect.

medium-gfuqnmr92jonri_pdvp_j8boai4b6eikumm1-2rui2u

Let’s just get this out of the way and not even pretend that this isn’t a MAJOR reason we’re excited to watch this new reality series. Anytime we get a Backstreet Boy on the TV on the regular is a good time to be alive. If Nick’s guest judge stint on DWTS was any hint of how well he’ll do on Boy Band, we’re here for it.

Judge away, Nick Carter. Mold this boyband!

2. A Spice Girl and Timbaland.

NICK CARTER, EMMA BUNTON, TIMBALAND

While Nick’s fellow architects are two of our favorite people in the music industry, we’re also excited for selfish purposes. It only seems natural that this bond between architects will extend beyond the show and into our grubby little hands with a Spice Girls or Timbaland + Backstreet collab, right? RIGHT?!

3. A Plethora of Future Boybanders To Choose From.

rs_1024x683-170619162809-1024x683-boy-band-cast-lp-61917

We can say that the Backstreet Boys are our only ones all we want, but be real, our “yeaaahh” answer to “Am I the only one?” is a lie. While the Boys may be the only ones in the moment they ask, and ultimately our ride or die, we’re always up for fresh boyband blood. If they can sing, dance in synchronization, point at us and pay homage to their predecessors, we’ll give them a chance.

Learn a little more about the sweet-faced, talented contestants here and get your boyband brackets ready!

(But if they ever win a Grammy – before the BSB – we’re finished.)

4. We Love To Have A Say!

rs-boy-band-4e30a1b4-e7ee-4230-8ea1-05e06d5dda8c

Just like we voted our fingers off for Nick during Dancing With The Stars, we will also vote for our favorite boybanders. After all, we ARE the experts. Actually, we should take turns as the 4th architect, right? We HAVE been doing something right for 24 years. While Nick, Emma, and Timbaland might know what it takes to be in a boyband, we can pretty much predict how well they’ll do in real life.

Like, which one of these boys can take a crazy fan running at them screaming? Actually, can that be one of the things they have to go through? Should they go on a cruise first and see how that goes? Being in a boyband is tough work and how you handle fans can make or break you…. believe us.

Anyway, once Boy Band moves into live shows, watch our social media for how you can vote!

Want to read more about Boy Band? Head to nickcarter.net where interviews and updates will be posted. We will also be doing our best to give you our thoughts every week following the show (similar to our “Thoughts About…” DWTS posts).

Of course, we’ll be live tweeting as well.

WHO. IS. READY?! Grab your popcorn and your expectations – we’re about to get ourselves a new BOY BAND!

5 Updates On What The Backstreet Boys Are Doing Right Now

The Backstreet Boys have been on a break from their Vegas shows since the end of April, but it has been an anything-but-restful break. Instead of our planned Vegas April happenings review, we’ve decided to instead catch everyone up on all of the things Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick have been working on, attending, and ultimately, killing (in the best way).

1. AJ McLean To Voice New Disney Character In Lion Guard

medium-ujdvi60zdrz_5w5g1zjzz0_l1pjjtpiifhdyysrmvja

After seeing AJ’s [literal] killer performance in Dead 7 last year as Johnny Vermillion, we had no doubt that we’d see him back on the screen soon. But Disney?! We wouldn’t have predicted it, but we are 100% about it.

AJ will be playing a blind golden mole named Kuchimba… who also thinks he’s a ninja. He also, of course, has a fantastic singing voice. Read more about the role and how it came to be here.

2. Those Guys From The Viral “Back To The 90s” Video Were Invited To Vegas.

If you haven’t seen this nostalgia-heavy video yet, WATCH IT ASAP!

After the video became a viral sensation, everyone wanted to talk to this faux-boyband, including AJ. Check out what happened in the video below!

3. Nick Carter Became BFF With Steve Aoki.

medium-acomtuhmisnhmoff4atb0fat-2gafukwk_ijoosjgvu

No one that showed up to see EDM superstar Steve Aoki at Omnia Nightclub in Vegas a few weeks ago expected to also see a Backstreet Boy.

Yet there he was. Nick Carter joined Steve for a hot mix of “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” and well… just watch the videos (and the post on nickcarter.net). We’re super jealous of anyone that was there (and we really hope it happens again)!

(Sorry for all of the parentheses :))

4. The Boys Return To Wango Tango!

medium-oz00j2tmwiqw4j3ntpmegefa3bxp6uz7qk6s9wklfoa

The Backstreet Boys reemerged together to play 93.3 Summer Kick Off in Chula Vista, CA on Friday, where they obviously killed it…. and impressed every One Direction fan who threatened to sue 1D if they came back without choreography and hoped that 1D’s return would be as bomb as Backstreet’s.

Now… to Wango Tango the next night… our Boys SHUT. IT. DOWN.

Literally.

Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick brought a sample of their current Vegas show to the SoCal stage and were honestly the highlight of the night, but we could be a little biased. This was their first time on the festival’s stage in 10+ years and they couldn’t have made us prouder (or made us want to go back to Vegas) more. Thanks to WeirdWorldChile for capturing the live stream below!

Tell us you aren’t obsessed.

BUT THAT’S NOT ALL…

The Boys spent a good bit of time talking to media outlets on the Red Carpet about a new album, a new tour (IT’S HAPPENING, NAYSAYERS), babies, and how weird BSB would be without Howie D. We’ve put them all in one place just for your enjoyment.

5. The Backstreet Boys at ABC Upfront + Nick Joins Boyband

When all five Backstreet Boys flew into New York on Monday, we knew something was up (that was probably none of our business, but…you know…). We knew that Nick was appearing in-studio with Good Morning Footballbut WHAT ELSE?

We’ll tell you what else.

These sneaky sneakers performed as entertainment at ABC Upfront, an event that previews / announces / gives insight to all upcoming shows on ABC network for the upcoming year. If you’re asking us to TELL YOU WHY, we will.

ABC is premiering a new reality competition this Summer entitled Boy Band, where male contestants will compete for a chance to join a band and sign a record deal. Why are we telling you this? Because our very own Nick Carter is joining Baby Spice (Emma Bunten) as a judge… er, “architect”. Similar to The Voice, these architects will mentor the gentleman and have say in who competes before America gets a chance to vote.

WE. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

As soon as we have more details about the show, we will post. For now, you can start supporting by following their Twitter account.

For now, enjoy clips of the Boys performing at Upfront!

Is this enough news for you!? Take it all in, fan-mily. It’s a GREAT time for the Backstreet Boys, but it’s never lost on us how lucky we are that they are still out there doing these amazing things for themselves and for us.

In conclusion, these are the things we have to look forward to:

  • AJ in Lion Guard (and maybe releasing his solo album but…)
  • Nick on Boy Band
  • The rest of BSBVegas (and a possible extension)
  • A world tour (Do not fight me on this – it IS happening)
  • Their 10th album
  • The acoustic album they keep mentioning
  • A few more festivals
  • A few conventions if you have a Nick or AJ preference
  • Taking over the world with the Backstreet Boys… like we’ve been working on for 24 years.
  • BSB Cruise 2018
  • SO. MUCH. MORE.

As always, we’ll keep up so you don’t have to!

Oh, and also, Zac Efron loves the Backstreet Boys. WHAT?!

What Happened In Vegas: A #BSBVegas VIP and Concert Review

As soon as we found out when the Backstreet Boys would be taking over Las Vegas, we were aware that we, too, would have to take over the same week. No way were we going to miss this epic occasion and definitely no way could we wait weeks before seeing it!

So here we are, ready to tell you everything you need to know (and maybe some things you didn’t)! Normally, our posts are pretty objective and while we’ll try to stay that way here, some things we can’t help but weigh in with our own opinions.

If there’s anything we don’t cover, definitely hit us up to ask!

VIP Meet And Greet

The Pre-Show VIP Lounge

Once upon a time, Backstreet fans going to VIP meet and greets were SO over waiting in lines for hours on end. Wonderful Union listened to them and BOOM! The birth of the pre-show VIP exclusive lounge.

Upon arrival, we were fairly quickly checked in, given our lanyards (which change photos every night), two drink tickets and directed upstairs. We were then lined up to get drinks from the bar (also exclusively for VIP goers since there was no one else in the venue). For those asking what drinks are offered, everything from water to wine to champagne to ale to soda. If you consume liquids, you are covered. Also, you don’t HAVE to wait here if you don’t want. You can definitely bypass and come back.

While you’re waiting, you can take your photo with friends in front of a snazzy looking Red Carpet-esque background. This is the perfect opportunity to get those pre-BSB jitters out!

DSC02669

After getting our drinks (which you CAN take into the venue with you if you’re still drinking them by them), we moved into the lounge. From the photos above, you can see that it’s a totally chill club-like atmosphere. There are glow colored light orbs, a snack table, cool seating with oversized games to play while you wait.

There’s also a REALLY cool photobooth (put together by our favorite BSB photog, Justin Segura). There will be a line of people waiting to jump inside so if you want to bypass and chill with friends, we definitely had time after the meet and greet to snap our pics! You  don’t want to miss it though. It comes complete with head-size BSBmojis on a stick (that we really want to own), props and fantastic lighting (seriously – I need that light in my life).

These photos from the photobooth will come to you via text or email and ready for you to share online! Don’t worry if you don’t get them immediately – the wifi is spotty in the hotel. We got ours after we already got home… 24 hours later. What a nice parting gift!

Meet and Greet

HQ BSB GroupHQ BSB VIP

You can chill in the lounge until you line up for the photo. At our VIP experiences, we were lined up all at once. Since then, they’re trying out dividing everyone into groups so not everyone has to line up at once and you get more time to utilize the lounge while you wait, which is actually a really good idea (especially for those in fancy shoes).

Simply speaking from our own experience and observing others, the actual act of meeting the Boys is what you make it. We saw people go in with props, hats, ideas, etc. for their photo and we saw people go in, take a photo and come straight out. From the time Kristie went on Friday until we both went on Saturday, things were being worked out to make for a smoother experience.

The Boys were as kind as they always have been. Brian came out from behind the screen (where photos were being taken) to goof around and seemingly put everyone at ease, then he welcomed every person with a hug. Every. Single. Person. It was Brian, AJ, Nick, Kevin and Howie… for those of you who would like to know order ahead of time. Each of them took the time to hug everyone and at least say a little something. We definitely had time for some conversation.

We didn’t feel rushed at all – which is HUGE for VIP. A sold out meet and greet has around 150 and everyone seemed to be satisfied with the time they got. No one yelled at us to keep moving and everyone was insanely friendly.

Note: if you are someone that brings gifts to the Boys for shows, don’t. You will be made to check your bag upon entry into the venue and retrieve it later. Save the room in your luggage for merch!

Also, there is no group option for meet and greet. We used one of our individuals for a photo with all of us (which IS allowed).

Following meet and greet, we were sent back into the lounge where, as I said above, we had time to snap some shots in the photobooth.

….And freak out about meeting all of our Boys. Because that never gets old.

The Show

DSC02680.JPG

We’ll admit… we judged the show by the setlist before we saw the show. It’s void of anything from IAWLT and, as expected, is made up of mostly hits and singles with a few surprises (“Undone” and “Darlin'”, anyone?). For anyone wanting a timeline, the show started around 9:10ish and is 96 minutes long (thanks venue guy).

We’re happy to say that WE. WERE. WRONG. (Ok, I’m never REALLY happy to say that, but in this case…)

Here’s where we will do our best not to spoil too much for those who want to be completely surprised. Some of the things we loved the most (scroll past if you don’t want to know ANYTHING):

  • The 12 minute opening megamix video that can be found here and the way the Boys appear onstage (WHAT?! Did NOT see that coming!)
  • Kevin joining in on “Undone”.
  • The way the Backstreet Boys collectively sound the same live as they do on the albums. Obviously, this is nothing new, but for some reason, it is very striking inside the Axis theater.
  • We never expected “The Call” to be SO sexy! Wow.
  • Something about AJ and Kevin rapping during “Get Down” really hyped us.
  • The thought of dancers added to the show wasn’t something we were always crazy about, but they really DO add to the show.
  • Brian. Littrell. Seriously, whatever he has been doing for his voice and whatever the group is doing to help is working. So much so that the first night either of us were there, we found ourselves in inevitable tears and cheering just a little bit louder.
  • There’s a few ballroom moves (that we’re pretty sure Sharna Burgess had a hand in) that left us remembering how much Nick deserved that Mirrorball Trophy, but whatever. We also forgot that Kevin was ballroom trained until we saw those moves! Seriously though, all of the choreography is ON point.
  • The wardrobe…whew!
  • The whole production!

There’s also not a bad seat in the house. Let us show you!

Table Seating

These photos were taken from a table on the right side facing the stage. The view is probably the best you can get because there is NO ONE in front of you and the longer-armed Backstreet Boys can reach you pretty well. For those of you that have purchased a seat at a VIP table that included a bottle of champagne, please be aware that the bottle does not arrive until mid show. Pace yourselves! Being in the front means everyone can see you, including the Backstreet Boys. You don’t want to get sloppy.

Section 104, Row A

These photos are from section 104, row A, directly behind the second row of tables. It’s definitely a good spot if you want to see the whole stage and have a seat. When the Boys come to the “second stage”, we had a completely unblocked view of whoever was in front of us at the time. It was, however, hard to see anyone at the other end of the second stage. They all go back and forth though, so you get a chance to see everyone!

SPOILER: AJ walked right down our aisle in front of us while going back to the stage during “All I Have To Give”. When I say in front of us, I mean that he could literally step on our feet.

General Admission AKA The Pit

To be honest, being in the pit was our last night and we were tired. We were almost dreading it (the standing, not the show) after having seats and great views.

We’re here to tell you that as soon as the show started, we regretted ever regretting it. Besides the benefit of possible getting a hand touched or being seen / serenaded by Kevin, Brian, Howie, Nick or AJ, there’s just an energy in the pit that you can’t get from anywhere else in the venue. You’re IN the stage. You’re IN the show. You have no choice but to dance your heart out and feel good about it. There was also plenty of room to move around if you didn’t squeeze yourself into a small spot.

It also makes for great people watching when you turn to face the audience.

Overall, we are not lying when we tell you that if you treat yourself to ANYTHING in 2017, this should be it. The whole experience was one that we would repeat and, even though it’s only been a week since we were there, we’re ready to go back this instant!

As we stated in a previous post, this show would not have been nearly as great if it weren’t for each individual Backstreet Boy bringing something to the table or the fans who showed up, screamed loudly, and sang along to every word. Vegas is for all of us and, if you can, get yourself there to enjoy it.

Special thanks to Wonderful Union (you know who you are) for listening to us and pulling this together and continuing to listen and continuing to change things until it is ultimately perfection!

Did we leave anything out? Do you have questions? Want more photos? We have thousands. Hit us up via Twitter, Facebook, or email and we’ll tell you all the truths you need to know. Also, check out our BSB Vegas FAQ.

…. And don’t forget to share your experiences with us! Next week, we’ll start our weekly “What Happens In Vegas” posts highlighting everything that happened for the week and we want to include you guys.

#BSBVegas: The One With All The Backstreet Boys

Fresh off a flight from Vegas, we’re still reeling from all the amazing things we saw going down this past weekend, the first week of the Backstreet Boys Las Vegas residency.

In short, wow.

While we are working on a review of VIP, the show itself and all of the ins and outs, we felt it was most important to start out with, our favorite, a deep appreciation for each of the Backstreet Boys themselves. Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick poured every bit of themselves into perfecting this show and it shows. It shows in their performances and in their faces when you tell any one of them how incredible it really is.

So before the next blog, where we get into the technical side, we want to take a minute to really talk about each of them. Sometimes in the big production of things, we forget that these guys are five human beings doing their jobs. They thank us for showing up, but we can never thank THEM enough for showing up for 24 years.

Kevin

DSC02254

We will never stop being grateful for this guy’s return. While we loved the Unbreakable and This Is Us albums and tours, something about having Kevin there makes everything feel more complete. We absolutely couldn’t imagine the Backstreet Boys hitting Vegas in the way that they are without him. In VIP meet and greet, he makes sure that you don’t leave without hugging him and to look you in the eye while you’re talking, genuinely caring about what you have to say. On stage, he’s all about the perfection. He’s a visual pleasure – hitting every dance move with a crispness. Seriously, you can’t take your eyes off of him.

Howie

DSC02967

Ever the gentleman, Howie brings every bit of sweetness to the stage that he usually does….plus some hot!! Sweet D. has definitely only gotten better with age, as has everything about him. We really enjoyed his dance moves and the fullness that he gives to the collective voice of the group. Our favorite part of watching the shows, though, was the watching him interact with his wife in the audience. While other wives were there as well, it’s rare that we get a glimpse of the Doroughs together. Boy! Were they cute! The look on Howie’s face when he caught his wife singing along in the audience was something we were so happy to witness.

Brian

DSC02321.JPG

We’ve been praying and rooting for Brian since he spoke out about his ongoing vocal issues in 2015. While it is something he is still working on, anyone that didn’t previously know about it before entering the venue last week, wouldn’t have known. He. Sounded. So. GOOD. (Editors Note: So good that the first night, I cried.) We’re absolutely thrilled that “Darlin'” was brought back to showcase just how beautiful his voice has always been. There is also something to be said about the way he welcome EVERY SINGLE PERSON into the VIP meet and greet with open arms and seemed to try to put everyone at ease. We will never get enough of Brian Littrell.

AJ

DSC03002

AJ has always brought the right about of funk to the Backstreet Boys and Vegas is no exception. Always the one to walk on the line of what you should and shouldn’t say or do, he kept us on our toes. Then, there’s that voice. No one sounds like AJ McLean and we’re so lucky that he’s ours and that for the past 24 years, we’ve gotten to enjoy that gentle raspy voice live. Oh, and if you weren’t feeling comfortable in VIP after that Littrell hug, AJ will definitely make sure to make conversation that makes you feel like you’ve been best friends forever.

Nick

DSC02473

Oh, Nick. This is one man that leaves it all on stage. He is 110% all in on every performance and on fire from start to finish. His vocals are strong and fill the venue with sound that will make you feel some sort of way. We also have to mention that his Dancing With The Stars stint might be the reason his dancing is ON POINT these days, especially in dances like “The Call”. As for VIP, he’s working really hard at remembering people and there’s always something to be said for any artist that makes an effort.

Want to know what goes down in BSB VIP and our full review of the first week of shows? Stay tuned! (As soon as we recover…)
