25 Years of Hard Work and Humility: The Truth About The Backstreet Boys

When the Backstreet Boys formed in 1993, with their ages ranging from 13 to 22, they were only hoping to become a success and maybe, by some miracle, keep that success for more than a few years.

Fast Forward to 2018, Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ, and Nick are celebrating 25 years together and their first single, “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, in the top 10 on the American Top 40 Hot AC Chart. Media outlets who had counted the Boys out just a few years ago are now aware of their ongoing success and reporting on it as such. Their Vegas residency, announced in 2016 and running since March 2017, is still one of the best selling shows on the Strip, not only garnering the attention of fans across the world, but quite a few celebrities as well (including Niall Horan, Snooki, Gwen Stefani and more).

The Boys will be ending their residency next year only to start another world tour, their first since a successful tour hitting multiple countries worldwide from 2013-2015. Before heading out on tour, they will be releasing their highly anticipated new album in coming months, a follow up to 2013’s In A World Like This. Always ones to put fans first, the Boys previewed tracks that they had recorded already (that may or may not be on the album) earlier this year during an event on their sold out cruise.

How did they achieve such massive successes and what keeps them together? The question has been asked in many interviews and it all boils down to one thing — the Backstreet Boys are family.

“Nobody tells you what to do when you get to the top.” – Brian Littrell, Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of: The Backstreet Boys Movie

Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick have literally grown up in front of everyone’s eyes.

They’ve walked hundreds of red carpets.

They’ve received numerous awards.

They’ve released nine studio albums (even more songs).

They’ve filmed a documentary that revealed a lot of truth behind the biggest selling boyband of all time.

And they’ve always been honest about who they are as people and who they are as performers. Perhaps that is the best part of the Backstreet Boys – their authenticity.

Amidst their clean cut facade in 2001, 4/5 of the Boys appeared on TRL unexpectedly to announce that they would be putting the Black and Blue tour on hiatus to allow AJ McLean the time he needed to enter rehab and seek treatment for his alcoholism and depression.

“We didn’t want to sweep it under the rug,” Kevin Richardson had told fans at the time.

And that was the moment, for a lot of fans, that sparked a new sense of loyalty to the band they had screamed senselessly over as preteens. Things were changing. We were all growing up and dealing with things and so were they. Suddenly, there seemed like a new relationship had formed. This wasn’t a completely innocent band who had a dark past they weren’t telling us about. These were five talented human beings who were not only wildly successful at this point, but cared enough about their fans to be honest and cared enough about humankind in general to use their platform to bring awareness to the fact that addiction can affect anyone.

Really though, can a band really have a “dark past” when they’ve been open about everything that they’ve dealt with?

There’s been battles with addictions.

There’s been bad relationships that played out in the tabloids.

There’s been public family discord.

There’s been court battles with Lou Pearlman.

There’s been battles with each other.

There’s been vocal issues and illnesses.

The Backstreet Boys have been human. And they’ve done it in front of the entire world. They’ve addressed it. They’ve stayed classy about situations as they have gotten older and they’ve known that in order to be where they are now and who they are now, some things had to happen.

They know that even the ugliest battles have had silver linings and have turned those experiences into some of the best songs on their albums.

Most importantly, the Backstreet Boys have never let themselves be defined by the negative experiences they’ve had but rather, grew from them.

How Did The Backstreet Boys Become The Biggest Boyband In The World?

Simply put, hard work and remembering where they came from.

The Boys’ success did not come easy. They spent most of their early years playing in high school gyms to students who didn’t exactly love them before heading overseas to gain massive success. It wasn’t until 1997 that they found any fame in the U.S.

Any of them will tell you on any given day how grateful they are still for their continued success and that they never take it for granted. They also don’t take anyone else for granted who has helped them along their way. That has most recently included the team they worked with to produce “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”.

“The one thing that really made me impressed with them is that boys are so verbally appreciative of us,” Stuart Crichton says, who helped produce the Boys’ latest single. “They’ve had a lot of success, which more often than not makes artists aloof with you; the ego takes over. But in any interview, we all get mentioned. I can’t tell you how many times they’ve told us how grateful they are. Even the last time I saw Kevin (Richardson), he turned to me and was like, ‘I can’t tell you enough, but thanks so much for ‘Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. It’s just so great for us.’ It makes me want to work ten times harder for them.”

Throughout the Boys’ history, there aren’t many interviews where they HAVEN’T been extremely vocal about their appreciation for anyone has helped shaped their career, from musical inspirations, other artists, former managers, and, of course, fans.

That deep-rooted appreciation even extends to Backstreet Boys-creator Lou Pearlman, who ultimately scammed the group out of millions of dollars they were owed. Are they still bitter? No. In fact, they are sad for him and sad that things ended the way they did. When asked by Entertainment Tonight how they felt about his death in 2017, Kevin, Howie, AJ, Nick and Brian expressed that it was ‘bittersweet’ and recognized that the highs and lows that they have faced as a group, like the ones they did with Pearlman, made them the group that they are today.

As for their fans…

Not only do the Backstreet Boys tour worldwide to try to reach as many fans as possible, set sail on cruises with daily events and nightly parties with fans, continue to create music, and try to connect in their downtime, but they have gone above and beyond in some instances that you can read about here.

Did we also mention that the Boys are constantly giving back? From having their own charities to performing charity shows, the BSB are always giving back in any area that they can.

Earlier this Summer, you could find Nick (along with his family) raising money to fund classroom supplies for teachers and children at a local elementary school in Las Vegas as well as helping raise awareness for the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation. Howie Dorough consistently makes appearances at charity events in his local Florida community as well and AJ McLean raised funds for a local school in California to be able to replace instruments that were stolen as well as a complete music room makeover.

Kentucky cousins Kevin Richardson and Brian Littrell have also been notably philanthropic and very big advocates for different causes, especially those they have been especially touched by. Kevin, who lost his father to colon cancer at a young age, has been vocal about the importance of early screenings. He’s also involved environmental conservation (and has sent several kids to college on environmental scholarships) as well as opening up about he and his wife’s fertility struggle in an effort to help other families who might be going through the same journey. Brian Littrell, while quieter about his charitable giving in his local area of Georgia, has perhaps been the most active Backstreet Boy with his own charity, Healthy Heart Club for Kids. While the charity has dissolved and evolved into a larger reaching “Just Ask”, Brian has never shied away from spreading awareness about living a heart-healthy life, having been affected by his own heart disease since he was an infant.

As a group, the Backstreet Boys donated $1 of every Vegas residency ticket sale to the Animal Foundation in Las Vegas during their first run and to the Boys and Girls Club during their second run. They also visited the Club to speak with the kids about pursuing their dreams and the importance of hard work before spending time shooting hoops and showing them a few dance moves.

“Not only are we group members and business partners, but we’re family.” – Kevin Richardson

“Those guys can go a cappella at the drop of a hat and deliver an amazing performance — and they actually dance, and are committed and disciplined,” Joseph Kahn, now famed director who got his start with the “Everybody” music video, told Billboard. “Sometimes when you’re a solo act, you have no one to say ‘no’… The great thing about boy bands, and why Justin Timberlake comes out fine, is that you have people around you to say ‘No.’ You have to learn how to share, it’s like growing up in a family. That’s the Backstreet Boys. They’re brothers. They’re truly a band.”

While there’s a lot to be said for the Backstreet Boys working hard and cultivating an atmosphere of humanity and gratitude throughout their 25 year career, none of it would have been possible without each individual member of the talented quintet.

These five are brothers. They are admittedly family, with high highs and low lows like everyone else. They’ve very literally grown up together. Like family, they stick together and stand by one another. They take the hits, they roll with the punches, and together, they get rise to the occasion everytime.

So, it’s no surprise to anyone that has followed the Boys for any amount of time that they would take up for one another and hear each other out when a less than ideal situation arises. It’s this united front that has kept them together and it’s a genuine love and deep-rooted care for each other that has given them a bright future. While they have been honest about their arguments and kept it real about how they’ve had fall outs here and there, there has always been an underlying respect for each other in their words.

Clearly, the Backstreet Boys are not going anyway. For better or for worse.

And it’s not just being family with each other. With Brian, Kevin, Howie, AJ and Nick all married with children, the family has expanded to include Leighanne, Kristin, Leigh, Rochelle, Lauren, Baylee, Mason, Maxwell, Holden, James, Ava, Lyric and Odin.

It goes without saying that the Backstreet Boys are in a good place, personally and publicly. There’s a whole lot of love to go around.

Taking The High Road

“Things are really good in our lives right now. We’re really fortunate and we know that is a blessing.” – Nick Carter, Paper Magazine, 2017

Lastly, and perhaps the most refreshing in times of social media where it is so easy to react quickly, is the fact that Kevin, Howie, Brian, AJ and Nick have never been, for lack of a better term, petty. Not since they’ve grown up anyway.

Since the beginning, they’ve taken whatever the public and the media has thrown at them in stride and have taken it as fuel to work harder, only addressing what needed to be addressed. Their music has, and will continue to, speak for them.

Because they have been open (as much as they need to be) about their highs and lows, they have opened themselves up for criticism that they have handled pretty well…but they’ve also been able to form a deeper connection with folks around the world – from fans to celebrities to the general population.

They are the people’s musical group. They’ve made it abundantly clear that they’re just five regular guys that tour the world and share their talents in front of millions but also take out the trash when they’re home and put on their pants the same way we all do.

Always classy, always appreciative, and always looking to be better, do more, and work harder, Kevin Richardson, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, AJ McLean, and Nick Carter continue to inspire new musical acts (including Florida Georgia Line, who they recently collaborated with and country artist Lauren Alaina, who met the Boys at the CMT Awards), get name dropped by other celebrities who have nothing but love and respect for them and continue to inspire legions of fans, some who have followed them for years and some who are just jumping on the bandwagon. Some even credit the Backstreet Boys with making music that saved their lives.

“It’s the music, it’s the love, truthfully. We love this. It might sound cliche, but we love being The Backstreet Boys. We love what it represents. We enjoy what we do. We take pride in what we do, we have a common goal that unites us, and we do genuinely care about each other. We do genuinely want the other to be happy and fulfilled and allowing each other to do individual stuff,” the Boys told Robin Leach in an interview last year.

In an interview with People this year, Brian stated, “We’re blessed to still be doing this for so long and be so prosperous for so many years. The fans have really done it for us.”

The Backstreet Boys are entering a new era and there is no doubt that it is going to be a successful one.

We’re here for it. Are you?

A Shout Out To Howie D.

It has taken us longer than we should have to write this post, but it’s been a crazy few weeks!

If you’ve followed our posts for any length of time, you know that while we try to be fair about posting equally about the Boys individually. Sometimes, this is hard, especially with people like Howie, who we LOVE, but who is also a pretty private person.

BUT here we are because the way Howie D. treated fans a few weekends ago at FanBoy Expo in Knoxville, TN was definitely something to be admired. Much like our post about Kevin following CMT Crossroads, this is based on a personal experience that we can’t help but share because he deserves it.

Howie has been the quiet, unassuming Backstreet Boy for many years. He’s incredibly kind, intelligent, and down-to-earth and we can not tell you how much we appreciate it.

The weekend of Fanboy Expo, Nick, AJ, and Howie were all scheduled to appear Friday-Sunday. Due to travel issues, Howie was the only one who made it on Friday and by the time we got there, he had quite a line.

Let us tell you a few things:

  • He stayed from open to close every single day.
  • He took his time talking to every single fan. EVERY. SINGLE. ONE.
  • When it was time for him to go to a photo op, he was worried about what the people still waiting in line for him for selfies / autographs were going to do.
  • He was willing to have a beer with us and so appreciative when Kristie bought one for him. So grateful that he came over to cheers and take a photo.
  • We can not stress enough how real he kept it and how down to earth he remained the entire weekend. He remembered everything we told him everytime he saw us.
  • Kristie and I tend to be a lot together when you don’t know us, but Howie was more than willing to participate in our antics and was relatively excited about it.

We didn’t know what to expect from Howie D. at a con appearance as this was his first legit con that he attended, but we are so glad that we had the experience because it has given us a new appreciate for perhaps the most soft spoken of the group.  He took his time, he heard what we were saying and made a point to have conversation, he connected, he made sure everyone’s photos turned out okay…. and he admitted that drinking is the best way to handle a Backstreet Boys cruise (right??)!

He was an unexpected, genuine, sweet surprise during our weekend in Knoxville and we can’t wait to see him again in the future.

Howie…

If you finally found WHOTB (lol) and you’re reading this, thank you for sharing your weekend (and 25 years) with us. Your attentiveness, you attitude, and your care for everyone really went a long way and we really do appreciate you. Also, thank you for being the responsible one and taking the Tide pen.

If you want your own experience with Howie at an upcoming con appearance, he has recently been added to the line up at Wales Comic Con in the UK in December.

For the latest on more appearances, follow us on social media or sign up to get our blogs emailed to you!

Happy Birthday, Howie D.

At the end of Summer, when kids are going back to school and Fall is upon us, Howie D. gives us one more reason to celebrate before the season’s end.

It’s been 44 trips around the sun for the spiciest (and arguably the quietest) of the Backstreet Boys and each year he just keeps getting better. While Howie keeps a pretty low profile when offstage, that doesn’t mean he hasn’t continually made a huge impact on us. The man gets better with age – google his photos RIGHT NOW! We can’t wait for at least 44 more years with Howie. What a fox!

Happy Birthday… to the stealthiest Backstreet Boy we know.

Happy Birthday… to the man who has proven that he can sleep literally anywhere.

Happy Birthday… to the man who stays low key but makes huge contributions.

Happy Birthday… to the man who made winking cool.

Happy Birthday… to the best party crasher.

Happy Birthday… to the man who taught us how to party all night.

Happy Birthday… to the man who apparently created the beat for “The Call”.

Happy Birthday… to the man who is always willing to stop for a fan and live up to his “Sweet D.” name.

Happy Birthday… to the man who puts up with Nick’s antics the most.

Happy Birthday… to the man who shows up to nearly every event, whether it be a BSB event, a wedding, a vow renewal, or a red carpet premiere.

Happy Birthday to the husband, the father, the brother, the son, the giver, the Latin lover, the hip shaker, the Backstreet Boy — our Howie Dorough!

We couldn’t imagine the Backstreet Boys without you. Thank you for giving us your all 110% of the time. We appreciate you more than you know.

What Happened In Vegas: A #BSBVegas VIP and Concert Review

As soon as we found out when the Backstreet Boys would be taking over Las Vegas, we were aware that we, too, would have to take over the same week. No way were we going to miss this epic occasion and definitely no way could we wait weeks before seeing it!

So here we are, ready to tell you everything you need to know (and maybe some things you didn’t)! Normally, our posts are pretty objective and while we’ll try to stay that way here, some things we can’t help but weigh in with our own opinions.

If there’s anything we don’t cover, definitely hit us up to ask!

VIP Meet And Greet

The Pre-Show VIP Lounge

Once upon a time, Backstreet fans going to VIP meet and greets were SO over waiting in lines for hours on end. Wonderful Union listened to them and BOOM! The birth of the pre-show VIP exclusive lounge.

Upon arrival, we were fairly quickly checked in, given our lanyards (which change photos every night), two drink tickets and directed upstairs. We were then lined up to get drinks from the bar (also exclusively for VIP goers since there was no one else in the venue). For those asking what drinks are offered, everything from water to wine to champagne to ale to soda. If you consume liquids, you are covered. Also, you don’t HAVE to wait here if you don’t want. You can definitely bypass and come back.

While you’re waiting, you can take your photo with friends in front of a snazzy looking Red Carpet-esque background. This is the perfect opportunity to get those pre-BSB jitters out!

DSC02669

After getting our drinks (which you CAN take into the venue with you if you’re still drinking them by them), we moved into the lounge. From the photos above, you can see that it’s a totally chill club-like atmosphere. There are glow colored light orbs, a snack table, cool seating with oversized games to play while you wait.

There’s also a REALLY cool photobooth (put together by our favorite BSB photog, Justin Segura). There will be a line of people waiting to jump inside so if you want to bypass and chill with friends, we definitely had time after the meet and greet to snap our pics! You  don’t want to miss it though. It comes complete with head-size BSBmojis on a stick (that we really want to own), props and fantastic lighting (seriously – I need that light in my life).

These photos from the photobooth will come to you via text or email and ready for you to share online! Don’t worry if you don’t get them immediately – the wifi is spotty in the hotel. We got ours after we already got home… 24 hours later. What a nice parting gift!

Meet and Greet

HQ BSB GroupHQ BSB VIP

You can chill in the lounge until you line up for the photo. At our VIP experiences, we were lined up all at once. Since then, they’re trying out dividing everyone into groups so not everyone has to line up at once and you get more time to utilize the lounge while you wait, which is actually a really good idea (especially for those in fancy shoes).

Simply speaking from our own experience and observing others, the actual act of meeting the Boys is what you make it. We saw people go in with props, hats, ideas, etc. for their photo and we saw people go in, take a photo and come straight out. From the time Kristie went on Friday until we both went on Saturday, things were being worked out to make for a smoother experience.

The Boys were as kind as they always have been. Brian came out from behind the screen (where photos were being taken) to goof around and seemingly put everyone at ease, then he welcomed every person with a hug. Every. Single. Person. It was Brian, AJ, Nick, Kevin and Howie… for those of you who would like to know order ahead of time. Each of them took the time to hug everyone and at least say a little something. We definitely had time for some conversation.

We didn’t feel rushed at all – which is HUGE for VIP. A sold out meet and greet has around 150 and everyone seemed to be satisfied with the time they got. No one yelled at us to keep moving and everyone was insanely friendly.

Note: if you are someone that brings gifts to the Boys for shows, don’t. You will be made to check your bag upon entry into the venue and retrieve it later. Save the room in your luggage for merch!

Also, there is no group option for meet and greet. We used one of our individuals for a photo with all of us (which IS allowed).

Following meet and greet, we were sent back into the lounge where, as I said above, we had time to snap some shots in the photobooth.

….And freak out about meeting all of our Boys. Because that never gets old.

The Show

DSC02680.JPG

We’ll admit… we judged the show by the setlist before we saw the show. It’s void of anything from IAWLT and, as expected, is made up of mostly hits and singles with a few surprises (“Undone” and “Darlin'”, anyone?). For anyone wanting a timeline, the show started around 9:10ish and is 96 minutes long (thanks venue guy).

We’re happy to say that WE. WERE. WRONG. (Ok, I’m never REALLY happy to say that, but in this case…)

Here’s where we will do our best not to spoil too much for those who want to be completely surprised. Some of the things we loved the most (scroll past if you don’t want to know ANYTHING):

  • The 12 minute opening megamix video that can be found here and the way the Boys appear onstage (WHAT?! Did NOT see that coming!)
  • Kevin joining in on “Undone”.
  • The way the Backstreet Boys collectively sound the same live as they do on the albums. Obviously, this is nothing new, but for some reason, it is very striking inside the Axis theater.
  • We never expected “The Call” to be SO sexy! Wow.
  • Something about AJ and Kevin rapping during “Get Down” really hyped us.
  • The thought of dancers added to the show wasn’t something we were always crazy about, but they really DO add to the show.
  • Brian. Littrell. Seriously, whatever he has been doing for his voice and whatever the group is doing to help is working. So much so that the first night either of us were there, we found ourselves in inevitable tears and cheering just a little bit louder.
  • There’s a few ballroom moves (that we’re pretty sure Sharna Burgess had a hand in) that left us remembering how much Nick deserved that Mirrorball Trophy, but whatever. We also forgot that Kevin was ballroom trained until we saw those moves! Seriously though, all of the choreography is ON point.
  • The wardrobe…whew!
  • The whole production!

There’s also not a bad seat in the house. Let us show you!

Table Seating

These photos were taken from a table on the right side facing the stage. The view is probably the best you can get because there is NO ONE in front of you and the longer-armed Backstreet Boys can reach you pretty well. For those of you that have purchased a seat at a VIP table that included a bottle of champagne, please be aware that the bottle does not arrive until mid show. Pace yourselves! Being in the front means everyone can see you, including the Backstreet Boys. You don’t want to get sloppy.

Section 104, Row A

These photos are from section 104, row A, directly behind the second row of tables. It’s definitely a good spot if you want to see the whole stage and have a seat. When the Boys come to the “second stage”, we had a completely unblocked view of whoever was in front of us at the time. It was, however, hard to see anyone at the other end of the second stage. They all go back and forth though, so you get a chance to see everyone!

SPOILER: AJ walked right down our aisle in front of us while going back to the stage during “All I Have To Give”. When I say in front of us, I mean that he could literally step on our feet.

General Admission AKA The Pit

To be honest, being in the pit was our last night and we were tired. We were almost dreading it (the standing, not the show) after having seats and great views.

We’re here to tell you that as soon as the show started, we regretted ever regretting it. Besides the benefit of possible getting a hand touched or being seen / serenaded by Kevin, Brian, Howie, Nick or AJ, there’s just an energy in the pit that you can’t get from anywhere else in the venue. You’re IN the stage. You’re IN the show. You have no choice but to dance your heart out and feel good about it. There was also plenty of room to move around if you didn’t squeeze yourself into a small spot.

It also makes for great people watching when you turn to face the audience.

Overall, we are not lying when we tell you that if you treat yourself to ANYTHING in 2017, this should be it. The whole experience was one that we would repeat and, even though it’s only been a week since we were there, we’re ready to go back this instant!

As we stated in a previous post, this show would not have been nearly as great if it weren’t for each individual Backstreet Boy bringing something to the table or the fans who showed up, screamed loudly, and sang along to every word. Vegas is for all of us and, if you can, get yourself there to enjoy it.

Special thanks to Wonderful Union (you know who you are) for listening to us and pulling this together and continuing to listen and continuing to change things until it is ultimately perfection!

Did we leave anything out? Do you have questions? Want more photos? We have thousands. Hit us up via Twitter, Facebook, or email and we’ll tell you all the truths you need to know. Also, check out our BSB Vegas FAQ.

…. And don’t forget to share your experiences with us! Next week, we’ll start our weekly “What Happens In Vegas” posts highlighting everything that happened for the week and we want to include you guys.

XOXO. – Sara and Kristie

#BSBVegas: The One With All The Backstreet Boys

Fresh off a flight from Vegas, we’re still reeling from all the amazing things we saw going down this past weekend, the first week of the Backstreet Boys Las Vegas residency.

In short, wow.

While we are working on a review of VIP, the show itself and all of the ins and outs, we felt it was most important to start out with, our favorite, a deep appreciation for each of the Backstreet Boys themselves. Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick poured every bit of themselves into perfecting this show and it shows. It shows in their performances and in their faces when you tell any one of them how incredible it really is.

So before the next blog, where we get into the technical side, we want to take a minute to really talk about each of them. Sometimes in the big production of things, we forget that these guys are five human beings doing their jobs. They thank us for showing up, but we can never thank THEM enough for showing up for 24 years.

Kevin

DSC02254

We will never stop being grateful for this guy’s return. While we loved the Unbreakable and This Is Us albums and tours, something about having Kevin there makes everything feel more complete. We absolutely couldn’t imagine the Backstreet Boys hitting Vegas in the way that they are without him. In VIP meet and greet, he makes sure that you don’t leave without hugging him and to look you in the eye while you’re talking, genuinely caring about what you have to say. On stage, he’s all about the perfection. He’s a visual pleasure – hitting every dance move with a crispness. Seriously, you can’t take your eyes off of him.

Howie

DSC02967

Ever the gentleman, Howie brings every bit of sweetness to the stage that he usually does….plus some hot!! Sweet D. has definitely only gotten better with age, as has everything about him. We really enjoyed his dance moves and the fullness that he gives to the collective voice of the group. Our favorite part of watching the shows, though, was the watching him interact with his wife in the audience. While other wives were there as well, it’s rare that we get a glimpse of the Doroughs together. Boy! Were they cute! The look on Howie’s face when he caught his wife singing along in the audience was something we were so happy to witness.

Brian

DSC02321.JPG

We’ve been praying and rooting for Brian since he spoke out about his ongoing vocal issues in 2015. While it is something he is still working on, anyone that didn’t previously know about it before entering the venue last week, wouldn’t have known. He. Sounded. So. GOOD. (Editors Note: So good that the first night, I cried.) We’re absolutely thrilled that “Darlin'” was brought back to showcase just how beautiful his voice has always been. There is also something to be said about the way he welcome EVERY SINGLE PERSON into the VIP meet and greet with open arms and seemed to try to put everyone at ease. We will never get enough of Brian Littrell.

AJ

DSC03002

AJ has always brought the right about of funk to the Backstreet Boys and Vegas is no exception. Always the one to walk on the line of what you should and shouldn’t say or do, he kept us on our toes. Then, there’s that voice. No one sounds like AJ McLean and we’re so lucky that he’s ours and that for the past 24 years, we’ve gotten to enjoy that gentle raspy voice live. Oh, and if you weren’t feeling comfortable in VIP after that Littrell hug, AJ will definitely make sure to make conversation that makes you feel like you’ve been best friends forever.

Nick

Oh, Nick. This is one man that leaves it all on stage. He is 110% all in on every performance and on fire from start to finish. His vocals are strong and fill the venue with sound that will make you feel some sort of way. We also have to mention that his Dancing With The Stars stint might be the reason his dancing is ON POINT these days, especially in dances like “The Call”. As for VIP, he’s working really hard at remembering people and there’s always something to be said for any artist that makes an effort.

Want to know what goes down in BSB VIP and our full review of the first week of shows? Stay tuned! (As soon as we recover…)

Dear MTV, Tell Me Why… The Backstreet Boys Don’t Have A Michael Jackson Vanguard Award

The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, formerly known as simply the Video Vanguard Award and Lifetime Achievement Award, was introduced in 1984 during the MTV Video Music Awards. The honor is given to artists that have contributed to the impact MTV has had on pop culture, acknowledging their body of work.

A few recipients of this award have included David Bowie, Madonna, The Beatles, George Michael, Janet Jackson, Bon Jovi, Beastie Boys, U2, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Most recently, the award has gone to Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Beyonce and Rhianna.

Somehow, the Backstreet Boys have been skipped over. From a fan perspective, we didn’t vote for them to be #1 on TRL everyday from for them to be looked over now.

Dear MTV, the Backstreet Boys deserve this honor. Hear us out.

Since 1993, Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick have not stopped.

They’ve had court battles, life threatening surgeries, and personal battles all in the public eye.

They’ve grown up, gotten married, and had babies.

They’ve continued to work hard, to tour the world, to make music, to produce music videos long past the times of TRL and regular on-air video play, and connect with fans long past the time that the general public supported them the most.

They have each other’s backs and they have ours. They’ve never been bitter that they don’t get the fair amount of attention that their individual and collective talents deserve. They carry on because this is in their blood, because they love what they do, because they are a family. They remain five of the most humble guys that are still making music.

They are, and continue to be, the best selling boyband of all time.

Facts are facts.

Any appearance by the Backstreet Boys as recently as 2016 have garnered major attention from those who seem to have “forgotten” why they loved these Boys. Even those who aren’t fans can’t seem to deny the talent put before them.

If it comes down to music videos, please note that videos like “I Want It That Way” and “As Long As You Love Me” have 270+ million and 100+ million views on VEVO. That’s only in the past 7 years. Oh, and the “Everybody” video, directed by Joseph Kahn, who is now one of the biggest directors in the industry.

Also, like we mentioned, you can’t talk about TRL without talking about the Backstreet Boys. You can’t forget how they shut down Times Square on multiple occasions. You can’t forget the time they ran MTV on the day Millennium was released. You can’t forget the numerous VMA awards and performances in the US and Europe.

You can not deny the impact that the Backstreet Boys have had on MTV. You can’t deny the impact that MTV has had on the Backstreet Boys.

With the Backstreet Boys Las Vegas residency coming up, we feel like it’s the perfect time to bring them back to the forefront and give them the recognition that their 24 years of hard work deserves.

Don’t let us down, MTV. Don’t let the Backstreet Boys down.

Fans: In case this post is not enough, please sign this petition to let MTV know how many people think the Boys deserve this honor. Let’s get this!

7 Wishes We Have For The Backstreet Boys In 2017

kevinrichardson1061kissfmjingleballp8kmqfiecyyl-1

It’s a new year and, for a lot of us, the first time we will be seeing the Backstreet Boys together on stage again since the In A World Like This tour. While hitting Las Vegas is prominent on the mind of many, there is so much more we are wishing for in 2017 for the Boys and for ourselves.

1. An Insanely Good Time In Las Vegas.

The news of the Backstreet Boys’ ‘Larger Than Life’ Vegas residency has already made major headlines. Thanks to their recent promotion, people from all over are making plans to infiltrate Planet Hollywood’s Axis Theatre between March and July to see our fab five hit the stage together. We couldn’t be more thrilled for them and we couldn’t be more thrilled for more than just the normal fans to see them.

Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick deserve this. They have worked hard and tirelessly for nearly 24 years. We can only hope that 2017 brings them the love and recognition that they deserve.

We also hope that our own time in Vegas is absolutely one for the books. We’ve made plans with our friends, are booking hotels, flights, nailing down times, buying VIP experiences and more. We can’t wait! If you haven’t gotten your tickets or VIP yet, get it and hit it or quit it, y’all! It’s a new experience for ALL of us involved.

2. A Sweet Little Addition.

Let’s not forget that in just a few months, we’ll also have a new Baby Girl McLean. We have never been quiet about how much we A D O R E AJ and Rochelle as parents and we’re super excited to see them with two. Not only are we excited to see them with a new baby, but isn’t everyone dying to see Ava as a big sister as well? We can already see the matching outfits and sweet instapics. Here’s wishing the McLean family a happy and healthy arrival of their little one!

3. Some Healing.

If you’ve been following What Happens On The Backstreet for any amount of time, you know that we have been rooting for Brian Littrell for a while now. It’s no secret that he has been dealing with vocal struggles for a while now and in recent performances, we’ve all heard and acknowledged his improvements. We will continue to rally around him and hope that 2017 brings even more healing and peace for him. As long as he’s showing up, so will we. We will sing along when he asks and we’ll stand by him when he doesn’t even know it.

4. More Progress On A New Album.

We’re waiting very patiently on this one. We’re absolutely dying for new music, but as the Backstreet Boys do, they’re taking their time to perfect things. We’re cool with that as long as they don’t disappear on us! We’re actually learning to enjoy the anticipation. Backstreet Time will be obviously be alive and well in 2017 as much as it has been the past 24 years. Go ahead, Boys… we’ll wait. Check out all the progress here.

5. Solo Things?

Nick has mentioned more than once that he might work on another solo album between Backstreet projects and we all know that the man NEVER stops. We’re, of course, also hoping that AJ finally releases his solo album as well. We really can’t take the teasing anymore!

Speaking of teasing, we’re looking at you, Kevin Richardson.

6. Shining Moments.

Howie D. is [finally] relaunching his solo site this month! We really hope that in this year, on the new album, in the Vegas run that Howie finally gets the big love he deserves. We appreciate you so, Mr. Dorough. Check out his fresh new site here.

7. More Love, Less Hate.

We’ll post about it until we’re blue in the face, but the peace among fans has to start somewhere. It the battle of fans vs. the group / management, the constant complaining has GOT to stop. If you’re going to complain, be constructive and come with a resolution. Stop complaining for attention and stop the groupthink. Be the voice of reason. Shed light and stop starting fires. The less fires we start, the quicker we can build a bridge to repair all of the things that haven’t been the best in the past. In 2017, let’s all learn how to work together. We deserve it. The Backstreet Boys deserve. Everyone is working toward one goal – let’s get this!

Cheers to 2017, fan-mily!

We’re here for it and we hope you are too.

14 Things That Prove BSB World is Actually Disney World

Do you love Backstreet Boys and Disney just as much as I do? Sometimes I literally cannot decide which one I like more (or which one is Hot, Hot, Hot-er). Upon returning from my recent trip to Disney World, and hopeful for upcoming BSB events, I was inspired to write this post. There are obvious correlations between BSB and Disney, such as when the guys performed at multiple Disney events (including Disney World Christmas Parade 1997 and Disneyland Christmas Parade 2012) and, let’s not forget, how Nick Carter auditioned for the Mickey Mouse club in 1989 (when I was… hmmm zero years old). Luckily, he also auditioned for the Backstreet Boys, and took that life road instead. For those of you who have never been to Disney World/Land, do not worry– because Backstreet World is basically the same thing:

1. Backstreet World and Disney World are both the most magical places on earth.

In a [Disney] World Like This, Backstreet Boys got you. Oh, and did we mention that they are both from Orlando, FL? You know you want to go watch the Homecoming: Live in Orlando VHS right now. While in Backstreet World (AKA attending one of their concerts), you may turn into each of the Seven Dwarfs or the Inside Out characters during the various points of your experience. You are always in a crowd full of people and your body hurts from standing and waiting in lines for hours for a 5 second experience… but you mostly will experience/inhabit “Joy”, and it is always worth it. It really is an emotional “ride”, and both worlds are sure to give you memories that will last a lifetime.

2. Backstreet Boys Go To Disney.

Two of my favorite things together?! Mind. Blown. AJ just loves going to Disneyland with his family, and tells people where he is all the time because he loves the attention, apparently? Tell us something we don’t know.

3. Backstreet Boys are Disney characters.

Have you ever been walking around Disney parks and catch a glimpse of Aladdin, and have to stare at him because you could swear it is Kevin? Or have you gone to a Backstreet Boys event and see Kevin, but picture Aladdin? Either way, the feeling is mutual, and this is just too precious not to relive.

Just look at that stud. You know you’re picturing him belting out “A Whole New World” [DONT YOU DARE CLOSE YOUR EYESSSSS]. For those of you who have not yet seen Kevin and Lalie singing this together on BSB Cruise 2016, here it is.

4. Backstreet Boys orrrrr… Dapper Dans?

The Dapper Dans are an old time acapella group, and apparently the “original boyband”, at least as far as Disney is concerned. You can catch them covering “Everybody (Backstreet’s Back)” here. Who knew you can listen to Backstreet Boys music on Main Street USA?

5. Magic Kingdom.

In your own Fantasyland, you can only make believe that you are a Disney princess and your favorite Backstreet Boy is your Prince Charming.

I don’t know… $350? $600? Which VIP package do you want?

6. Epcot.

We’ve been all around, all around the world… Showcase. Epcot World Showcase is where you travel around the world to different countries, just like you do when you travel to see different shows of the tour. Or like when you play the Backstreet Boys “Around the World: game or watching the VHS/DVD. Totes the same thing.

7. Hollywood Studios.

Your life is like a movie: the Backstreet Boys movie, that is.

797x448_BackstreetBoys_udenbanner

8. Animal Kingdom

You know what happens to you when the Backstreet Boys come out on stage. The noises that come out of you sound nothing like humans, and we love it.

9. Bring your wallet.

In both Backstreet World and Disney World, you buy expensive tickets and wear expensive merch with the Backstreet Boys/characters’ faces on it, and as much as you try, you just can’t say no to buying all of it. The boys’ names might as well be Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Minnie and Daisy (sorry Nick and Howie).

10. Backstreet Time.

Need we say more?

dzd2d5da1954i

11. Helpless When We SMILE.

In both worlds, you’re always taking pictures with the boys/characters. Well, this looks oddly similar to VIP.

1024.bsb.ls.11512_copy.jpg

12. There Is Something For Everyone.

In both Backstreet and Disney Worlds, there is good entertainment and plenty of shows with singing and catchy tunes, including the Country Bear Jamboree.

Nick… Is that you on the banjo?

The-Country-Bear-Bear-Band-Bears-Now-in-High-Definition

13. #Stuckinthe90s.

We always live by Peter Pan’s mantra, and we “never grow up”.  We might break down and… spend all of our money on BSB events so that we can fangirl?… just like a child. But it’s okay, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

14. When You Wish Upon a [Shining] Star

You know you used to, and maybe still do, wish for Backstreet Boys life events to happen (e.g one day maybe you’ll get to meet them or be front row). Anddd then your dreams come true and fireworks burst as you stare into your favorite Backstreet Boys’ eyes as he’s singing to you. Yeah, it’s like that.

**And remember…**

Always let your conscience be your guide.

As in: Do you really need to go to another BSB show?

We know the answer is ALWAYS yes.

45(ish) Epic Fan Photos With The Backstreet Boys

Everytime new Backstreet Boys tours, events and general appearances come about, fans keep their eyes peeled for new photos. We also depend on our fellow fans to share their experiences and of course, their pictures with the Boys. What we especially love is when things get spiced up and fans stray from the norm. With VIP photos, snapchats, and selfies (oh my!) getting better and better, we asked you guys to share some of your silliest, funny, and different photos with Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick.

Here are some things we learned:

  • AJ doesn’t like to take normal pics and tells fans such.
  • There are a lot of Kevin girls that wish Nick was Kevin.
  • @nickytoronto, @sv02, and @FBTeam are REALLY good at this!

Check out the goods below!

Kristie has no story for this photo other than the Backstreet Boys played a Christmas show at her college and she was stoked about it …and so was Kevin. Obviously the mistletoe, Santa hats, and Towson sign were her ideas. What Howie is doing was not nor Kevin holding the mistletoe (Nick handed it to him due to he being the only BSB able to reach over Nick). Or the fact that it looks like her feet disappeared.

“So on the 2014 cruise I was extremely lucky to get one on one time with all the guys, I think it was the universe’s 30th birthday present to me. Anyways, I was heading back early from the beach party to the boat and overheard Nick and Brian playing volleyball. I’m so glad I peeked in and found that they were playing with teams of three fans each and the winner of the round got to stay and play against the next rotation of fans. I was going to hand back and just enjoy the view because I didn’t have anyone to play with but, then two girls in front of me started talking a good game. We teamed up and got selected to play next, awesome! Except as we’re running out onto the court I find out they’ve never played volleyball in their lives. Well, I figure, I got this, I’m a decent player and Nick is good, we can at least hold our own. I didn’t have it, it was a total loss. But that didn’t stop me from diving left and right into the sand for the ball. When we switched side of the net it got even worse! The sun in my eyes I got a volleyball to my face and almost broke my glasses. Nick asks if I’m alright and I am just super embarrassed. He asks again and I figure the bravado has been working for me so far, so I rip of my glasses and fling them to the side declaring “I’m good!” And we get back to the game. Taking off the glasses was the smartest and dumbest move ever because my depth perception was screwed from then on but the glasses cost $700 dollars so… With a final desperate dive I completely miss the ball and it’s the end of the game. I decide to just sit there for a sec because this has been unreal and I’m giddy and embarrassed but really couldn’t care less that we lost even knowing how competitive Nick can be (he totally wasn’t). He, ever the gentlemen came over to make sure I was alright and helped me up. I’m so glad someone got this picture and was able to find me on Twitter. It’s been my phone’s background ever since. You’d think the story ended there but there was a bit more to it. After the game I went back to my cabin to take a shower and get ready for a massage. I was one of the lucky girls staying in their hallway and had my door propped open as much as possible. So still completely covered in sand I see Nick passing by my room. He looks in, we laugh and he says the usual sportsmen kudos of “good game”. On cloud nine, I take my shower and head up to the spa where I’m joined by Kevin and Howie in the waiting area and Get to talk to them and AJ swings by as well but just to say hi to them and pop out.” – @waterunleashed

“Asking nick the All American tour VIP to do a funny pose. Had no idea if he did it because it went by so fast. But after when I saw this picture I was so satisfied that it came out the way it did.” – @Brok_Vanessa21

“AJ told me to do a funny pic cause he doesn’t like to be ‘casual’. So I made the 1st one bride to be cause I was getting married 1 month later this pic. The 2nd one with AJ was leather and lace. I told him “do u trust me?” And he said yes to me. And I put him the handcuff but I didn’t have any keys (haha). And he found the idea of the pic. But the handcuff didn’t need any keys to open 😉 so he really trusted me that day 🙂 and I told him: next pic I need to be pregnant!”

“Calm your titties pic is a joke between my UK friend and French fans. You know, we tried to learn some funny expression and that one was so funny. So we decided to do this pic. And choose Howie to be the one we will be around cause he is the nicest. ‘Boobies For Howie’ – his face was so embarrassed but happy at the same time.” – @FBTeam

“My very first VIP photo during the Unbreakable tour in Belgium! It was way too crowded and I was supposed to have my VIP the day before in Luxemburg, but there was a fire at the venue so the concert got cancelled and all the VIP were put together. Something with nerves again and I blurted out i wanted a crazy picture. Well… I think only nick heard me…. and Q held the rose in the picture because he thought it would look nice on the photo.” – @Utchie_debo

“I flew from SF to NC for just one day to attend AJs vape east coast launch. I ended up playing poker with him for an hour along with the rest of the people in the picture and I ended up kicking his butt and took all of his poker chips haha.So he made everyone point at me in this photo cuz I won.” – @blacknbluerocks

“At Jones Beach during the first IAWLT US leg, the forecast was rain…then proceeded to be all sun. We were melting in the heat during soundcheck; I was overheated in my my silly hot rainbows and was lugging around an umbrella (first world problems, yes!)…last minute I told them that happened and asked if I could use my umbrella in the picture…. and they said sure!!” – @sv02

“Before my most recent pic with Kevin (below) this is my favorite VIP pic, from  IAWLT in Concord, CA. Soundcheck started late, they held the venue off from opening until ~15 min before openers, so pix were super rushed/moved backstage…crazytown chaos trying to get us through while the venue was getting filled up, but mad brownie points Brian & Kev (and AJ kinda?) for actually getting air when I asked if they’d be willing to do a jumping picture! We counted off, but maybe Nick didn’t hear and Howie didn’t think it would work, I can’t tell. Bless Justin for doing a burst photo in case only one would work out 🙂 After we landed, Kevin said “I think that’s the first time we’ve ever done that!” and I was so happy I was speechless!” – @sv02

Nick and Brian signed their snaps! “Nick was like ‘huh? Oh dope!'” – @sv02

“Favorite of all time: I was afraid the filters would suck up time/fail, since the signatures were already stressful…it almost did…but when his tongue didn’t come out the second attempt, Kevin WOOFED. Adorable.” – @sv02

“We somehow figured out / guessed correctly what hotel the boys were staying at before GMA / other show appearances in 2012-2013…. Having been lucky to get normal pictures in the past, we joked about getting silly faces…little did we know that the Boys would be into it! Even Q!! The last hotel shot, I only caught Brian…I had hauled it uptown after a boxing class, so he appropriately posed to match my sweaty getup.” – @sv02

“NKOTBSB Tour, Toronto. This was after the Platinum VIP backstage tour. AJ told us he was sick of taking plain pictures and wanted us to come up with a unique idea for a photo. So I asked him if we could do a classic boyband photoshoot picture and he was totally into it! He was like “you guys have no idea how many photoshoots we had to do like that.” Oh AJ… yes we do lol.” – Stephanie Ives

“I went to Mexico 2015 and took this selfie without realizing that Nick, Brian, & Howie were in the background of my photo!!! (You can see Leigh, Leighanne, Lauren, Drew, Keith, Mike, Aaron there too). And then when I posted it on instagram that day… I basically wrote I didn’t realize BSB were behind me in this selfie I took! AJ had seen this pic (bcuz he follows me on Instagram) And the very next day i had VIP for their IAWLT Mexico show
And at soundcheck…AJ brought it up and talked about my selfie! He said it was awesome that I didn’t know Brian Nick and Howie were in my selfie until later on when I looked back at my pictures.” – @blackandbluerocks
