On January 30, 2015… it happened.
Right in the middle of Show ‘Em What You’re Made Of: The Backstreet Boys Movie, there it was. A song we had never heard before.
Maybe it was AJ’s vocals.
Maybe it was the look on Nick’s face or the piano Kevin was playing.
Maybe it was Brian’s hand dancing while he sang along.
But we wanted this song that they all seemed to work so hard on. We loved the lyrics. We loved them singing it. It was ONE minute in a 2 hour documentary and we can’t let it go.
What is it about this song that we all now refer to as “Spotlight” that has us so hooked? If you search the song on YouTube, you will find the top video option is the minute of the documentary and has over 8500 views! Our spirits were dashed a little when there was no soundtrack released for the movie, but we had high hopes that maybe if we begged, they’d drop it somewhere in the future.
Then, once upon a time, someone was brave enough to ask what happened to the song. Kevin, Howie, AJ, Brian and Nick seemed to hardly remember the song, but one of them did remember that they never finished the song.
They never finished the “Spotlight” song.
Ever since then, it has become the Moby Dick (the whale that can not be caught) of Backstreet songs. The one song that we will never be able to hear because IT DOES NOT EXIST. It is a Tickle-Me-Elmo and we are the doorbusting moms in the Holiday season of 1996 that can’t get our hands on it!
“Spotlight” (IF that’s even it’s name) is a ghost. It is an alien. We believe in it and want it to exist, but we may never hear more than that blissful one minute.
The fact is, in the land of Backstreet fans, it has never been completely impossible for us to have an unreleased song. Now, it has happened. We have no chill.
Think of it this way, what if the rest of it was trash? What if Kevin’s hand felt arthritic everytime he played the last verse? What if Howie wasn’t feeling it and threatened to leave if they recorded it? What if Nick’s face would always look THAT concerned while singing it? Watch the clip again – his face is worried.
The Backstreet Boys have been pleasing our ears for nearly 23 years so there HAS to be a reason “Spotlight” never made the cut. Maybe they don’t want to talk about it. For whatever reason, maybe we should just move on. Maybe we should trust them. Maybe we should resign to the fact that this song is “the one that got away” (like “Don’t Want You Back” never being a single…Nick).
WE GIVE UP, BOYS. You win.
But this next album better be damn good.
Or we’ll bring it up again. Like the bitter nagging family members that we are.
But we still that song was the shit.
But we also think you’re the shit and, like “Spotlight” (or whatever that song is called), we hope you’re never finished. ❤
